The protest march exploded like a spark to tinder. Vance, closer to the rear of the line than the front, felt it like a wave of energy passing through the crowd. Then he heard the screams from the front.

It took mere moments for someone to throw a punch at him, yelling genetic freak. He swung his placard around and it hit them in the face, blood spurting from a broken nose.

“Vance!”

He spun back to see Angel was pushing through the mass of people towards him. “Angel,” he called and she saw him. It would've been easy then, to push them all out of the way and go to her, but that wasn't why he was here, and it wasn't who he was.

He used his normal human strength to push through until they stood together.

“This is turning into hell,” she said, “and the Avengers are on their way.”

“You heard them?” he asked, shocked as she nodded. “This is going to turn into a massacre. It was supposed to be non-violent...”

“No kidding, those guys are killers. It'll be like shooting fish in a barrel with a freaking rocket launcher!” She was still a close friend to Spider-Man and he kept her in the loop about many things including the fake team of superheroes that Norman Osborne had created. “I think we should get out of here,” she added, swallowing hard. “I don't want to get arrested and disappear like other mutants have.”

“It's a rumour.”

“Nothing like that is just a rumour,” she said. “Spider-Man said they're taking heroes down everywhere, not just mutants.”

“Okay, I'm in.”

They ran down the street, ducking into an alley. They weren't alone, other mutants had fled the violence, along with normal humans, fleeing straight into the path of Wolverine? But they'd stopped dead, huddling tight to the walls, hiding in the shadows. One of them looked at them, “You're an X-Man?” she said, with no small relief. “Please, we're just trying to get home but he turned up.”

At the entrance to the alley, a familiar figure blocked the way.

“Shit!” cursed Angel. “It's Daken, I recognise him from the briefing on the Avengers. This guy is bad news. I don't think we can take him down but maybe I can slow him down long enough for you to get these people out of here.”

“Angel... I can help you, I'm no X-Man but I'm not a push-over either,” he said, worried by the look on her face.

“No, Vance, please... just, do as I asked and don't question my orders.”

“I can do this faster and from a reasonably safe distance,” he said stubbornly. “There's not reason to risk getting to close.” He picked up a car from the alley and dropped it on the dark version of Wolverine with as much force as he could muster. A scream of anger came from beneath the wreck and it rocked in place as the doppelganger tried to escape. “I guess I've gone and pissed him off,” he said, trying to make it sound casual and failing.

“No kidding!” She glared at him blackly.

“Double-team him?” he suggested brightly.

“I can't convince you to just run, can I?”

“Nope. I'm not leaving you.”

She fired a stream of microwave energy into the flattened car and the gas tank lit, exploding. “That should hold him for a minute.” She turned to him, pulling him down and kissing him hard. “If we're going to die tonight, then damned if I'm not getting the kiss I always wanted first!” she growled.
